Introducing SBH Cardmaker in the Limelight

Sharlene Meyer

What got you started in cardmaking?

I actually started as a scrapbooker after coming across a book about scrapbooking in a bookstore whilst pregnant with my first child.  I dabbled with stamps in my scrapbooking, but when Stampin’ Up! launched in NZ, I signed up as a Demonstrator and have been fully hooked on stamping & cardmaking ever since (to the neglect of my family albums!)

Where do you get your ideas?

I get ideas from many places – magazines, blogs, online galleries, Stampin’ Up! demonstrator resources and trainings, clothing stores, home décor flyers, stationery…..

What do you mostly create with your cards?

I mostly make Thank You cards as I always need a good stash of those, but I also really enjoy making very feminine cards that I can add some good flowers, ribbon & bling to!

How much time do you spend creating cards?

Not as much as I would like!  With a toddler in the house time is always limited, but she does still have a nap most days so that is when I try to sneak in a card or 3!

Do you have a special technique you like to use?

I have fallen in love with Watercolouring over the last year, and now seem to use it in one form or another on most of my cards!

How do you describe your cardmaking style?

Clean lines, on the straight, with minimal embellishment.

Are there colours, styles or products that draw you?

I now use almost 100% Stampin’ Up product.  I never intended to go this way, but constantly found myself drawn to their great colour co-ordination and fantastic images.  Their products continually inspire me.

What tools can you not do without?

Awl, Mat Pack, Metal Ruler, Paper Trimmer

What are two of your best organizational tips for crafters who do not have a lot of space.

Vertical storage for cardstock and stackable drawer units!  Also, always remove embellishments from their original packaging.  The packaging just takes up valuable space, and means you can’t always see what you have on hand

What advice would you give to those new to this craft?

Don’t go crazy buying stuff.  Get a couple of good quality basics to get you started and slowly build from there.  Ask to try friends/fellow crafters tools before you make an expensive purchase - I bought 4 paper trimmers before I found the one I loved – if I had just tried each one before purchasing I could have saved myself a lot of money!!

Describe your craft space.

I am lucky enough to have a dedicated study for crafting in.  I love that I can walk away in the middle of a project and know that it will be where I left it when I come back.  I have maximized storage and desk space by buying cheap office furniture – it’s all mis-matched and definitely not pretty, but it does the job and I love it!

If you were given 3 wishes what would they be?

  • To bring my beautiful son back from heaven
  • Not to have to watch my husband go to work everyday when I know he would much rather spend the day with his daughter, and
  • An unlimited crafting budget

Please share with us 5 random things about yourself.

  • I was a competitive Ballroom/Latin American Dancer for 12 years before I had children
  • I can fly a plane
  • I have have tiny feet
  • I love Jeffery Deaver’s crime novels
  • I get a bit short-tempered if I haven’t had the opportunity to do something creative every couple of days
